A murmur is a sound, not a diagnosis. The echo tells us which valve, how much, and whether it matters yet.

What it feels like
Often nothing. A murmur heard at a routine check, or breathlessness and tiredness that crept up. Sometimes a family history.
What we do first
A detailed echocardiogram measuring each valve: how much it leaks, how much it narrows, and what the heart is doing about it. That single scan sets the plan.
What we find
- Mild disease that needs a check every year or two.
- Moderate disease that needs closer watching and attention to blood pressure.
- Severe disease where timing the repair or replacement is the whole art. Too early is unnecessary; too late is irreversible.
What happens next
Surveillance with the same consultant reading every scan, and a surgical or catheter referral when, and only when, the measurements say so.
